Book Club meeting 9/26-Studio visit with Saira McLaren and Daybook Discussion

03Oct10

Saira McLaren’s work is awesome, check the link at right for more images. She uses watercolor and bleach on raw canvas to create incredibly layered, forceful, exciting works. The word that kept coming up in our studio visit was ‘sublime.’  Truly.

We also had an awesome discussion about Anne Truitt’s Daybook. The general consensus seemed to be that while it wasn’t an easy read, difficult to access at times and occasionally annoyingly flowery for our post-post-modern times, we all found some incredibly useful and important passages in it. She wrestles with everything from making work, to the art world to motherhood, interchangeably and on a deeply serious, focused, reflective level. Pretty awesome read! I would recommend, but it’s definitely not a beach read.
